Often in video games development our biggest problem isn't a lack of imagination.
We don't struggle to come up with creative and innovative concepts. It’s the challenge of turning those ideas into fun, immersive activities and experiences that aren’t easily broken. That’s when we encounter ‘The Gap’. The ambiguous space between vision and creation.
We may think of it as,
- Knowing you want the team to go to the Moon is the target.
- Figuring out how to make the rocket is the challenge.
- Assembling the rocket is the work.
Usually, we’re doing parts 2 and 3 at the same time.
That’s why its crucial that we understand how to deconstruct the vision and re-assemble it as repeatable processes and techniques that can be communicated across the implementation team, for consistent results. It’s also about recognizing the best practices and creations of each team member, and sharing them across the whole team, elevating everyone’s contribution.
